Investigations are moving forward into who assassinated Bhutto, new video not surprisingly contradicts the Pakistani government’s account by showing what appears to be gunshots. Press accounts are reporting wide spread violence and riots following the death, and funeral of assassinated former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. As outrage spread across the nation, there was finger pointing from all sides. Now, it seems Al-Qaeda has come forward claiming responsibility for the attack. While plausible, we’re still finding it hard to believe that Musharraf wasn’t ok with this outcome or that he didn’t know it was coming either directly or indirectly. Sharif has announced he will boycott the January 8 elections in Pakistan. This comes as no surprise, as it’s clear in light of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto that elections will likely not go forward for quite some time. The United Nations has slammed the Bhutto assassination. Pakistani TV is reporting that Bhutto’s body will be sent to Karachi for the funeral. TV reports are also showing fires and violence beginning to break out throughout Pakistan, causing the Pakistani military to go on red alert. News on the flipside (more…)

Al-Jazeera has this must read on Bhutto, extremists, and how westerners find the misguided notion of tribalism a comfortable way of explaining other countries.
