News of the goings on inside Pakistan has all but disappeared from the western media lately with the naval gazing over the presidential primaries dominating nearly every second of the news cycle. The elections in Pakistan have been set for February 18, Bilawal Bhutto the soon-to-be leader of the Pakistan People’s Party addressed the media commenting on both his mothers assassination, and his leadership ability. It’s no wonder that President Bush is such a staunch supporter of Musharraf and Karzai, they’re just like him. Rather than going after the Taliban, and other extremist groups that pose threats to their own national security, they only pay lip service to the idea out of one side of their mouth and pander to extremists with the other. The violence and chaos that followed the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has fostered speculation of civil war and the apparent postponement of elections until February. Elections in Pakistan were set to take place on January 8, but election officials in multiple districts have cited the alleged destruction of election offices and paperwork as the need for the delay. Reports are also showing that, Bhutto had evidence of election rigging operations by the government before her assassination. (more…)

Violence seems to have peaked over the weekend in Pakistan. Investigations are moving forward into who assassinated Bhutto, new video not surprisingly contradicts the Pakistani government’s account by showing what appears to be gunshots. Press accounts are reporting wide spread violence and riots following the death, and funeral of assassinated former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. As outrage spread across the nation, there was finger pointing from all sides. Now, it seems Al-Qaeda has come forward claiming responsibility for the attack. While plausible, we’re still finding it hard to believe that Musharraf wasn’t ok with this outcome or that he didn’t know it was coming either directly or indirectly. Sharif has announced he will boycott the January 8 elections in Pakistan. This comes as no surprise, as it’s clear in light of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto that elections will likely not go forward for quite some time. The United Nations has slammed the Bhutto assassination. Pakistani TV is reporting that Bhutto’s body will be sent to Karachi for the funeral. TV reports are also showing fires and violence beginning to break out throughout Pakistan, causing the Pakistani military to go on red alert. News on the flipside (more…)

Al-Jazeera has this must read on Bhutto, extremists, and how westerners find the misguided notion of tribalism a comfortable way of explaining other countries.
