We’ve been watching Mukasey for a while, we were on the fence with his appointment: was he just another republican hack or was he the real thing as some have claimed? It seems like the jury is in, and Mukasey is just more of the same old thing. First he can’t decide if waterboarding is torture, and apparently has more positions on it than Mitt Romney on virtually every issue which is saying a lot. Then it was the CIA tape case which apparently doesn’t need a real probe. Now we find on further investigation he was about to become one of these highly paid, no bid corporate monitors we’ve been following since Ashcroft showed up as on in the Washington Post. (more…)

It seems the telecommunications companies are not so timid to stand up to the government when it comes to paying bills. The Washington Post and USA Today are reporting this morning that telecommunications companies are doing what Congress could not or would not – cut FBI covert surveillance lines. Apparently, the Bureau has been delinquent in over 500 (of 1000) telecommunications bills reviewed by Inspector General Glenn Fine, with one skipped check coming in at $66,000. In a weird confluence of Bush’s foreign policy playbook and the corruption present at every level of the Department of Justice, it seems Ashcroft has landed himself a multi-million dollar no-bid legal contract. Its been nearly a month since we started reporting on the destruction of the CIA torture tapes. We’re sure that certain folks within the administration were hoping it would go away in an egg nog induced haze, the case got new teeth yesterday when Attorney General Michael Mukasey launched a criminal probe into what happened with these tapes. New Attorney General Michael Mukasey is walking a fine line between being just another Bush crony and someone who could actually try and repair the damage done during the Fredo years at DoJ.  While he’s revised DoJ policy to limit contacts with the White House, he also argued before the American Bar Association in support of retroactive telecom immunity and FISA “reform”.
