Four men including a 72 year old former Boeing employee were arrested today for giving trade secrets and other defense technology information to the Chinese. These arrests mark a growing trend in broader Chinese espionage as China expands economically and militarily.
The men arrested today have charges ranging from offering trade secrets surrounding space and aerospace programs as well as giving up Defense Department documents. According to the BBC account:
Chinese-born Dongfan “Greg” Chung, 72, of California, faces charges including eight counts of economic espionage, conspiracy, and making false statements to FBI investigators.
In a separate case, a defence department employee and two others are accused of passing US government documents and information to China. The three suspects are Tai Shen Kuo, 58; Yu Xin Kang, 33; and Gregg William Bergersen, 51.
The arrests made today outline a growing trend, NATO nations have seen a spike in the amount of China-related espionage as China grows. Russia has also commented on increased arrests on foreign espionage.
