Sharif has announced he will boycott the January 8 elections in Pakistan. This comes as no surprise, as it’s clear in light of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto that elections will likely not go forward for quite some time. The United Nations has slammed the Bhutto assassination. Pakistani TV is reporting that Bhutto’s body will be sent to Karachi for the funeral. TV reports are also showing fires and violence beginning to break out throughout Pakistan, causing the Pakistani military to go on red alert. News on the flipside
Nawaz Sharif, who, as we’ve reported earlier has announced he will take up Bhutto’s fight after her death will be boycotting the January 8th elections. Mr. Sharif contends, probably rightly that free elections will not be able to go forward in the presence of Musharraf.
President Bush issued a public condemnation of the attack in this afternoon’s press conference. He also spoke to Musharraf on the phone where he reaffirmed the US’ support. Dictators always stick together in times of crisis apparently. Musharraf has said that he believes terrorists are behind the attack on former Prime Minister Bhutto. Although we wouldn’t be surprised to find this as nothing more than a transparent cover for a government action. In light of recent reports of misuse of aid money and politically motivated torture and disappearances.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has slammed the assassination of Benazir Bhutto calling it an “assault” on democracy in the region.
Fires and violence have broken out throughout Pakistan, heightening security concerns within the country.
